Name: Ruby Dandridge
Distinction: An early American actress and mother to the legendary Dorothy Dandridge
Brief History: Her early work was on radio shows, in the early days of the industry. She provided voice work on the shows Amos n’ Andy and Judy Canova Show. After giving birth to two daughters and divorcing her husband, Ruby moved in with her companion, Geneva Williams, who was reportedly abusive towards the children. She continued acting in films and television until the late 50s.
Importance: As I read her story, I feel a great deal of tragedy rising up from it. I can only imagine how difficult things must have been for her and her girls trying to have something approaching an undisturbed life during the 50s. It is always the burden of LGBT people to continue to struggle for a life unbothered by outside forces.
