So the final chapter (yes this is a shorter story) and I have to say that I was kind of on pins and needles the whole time while reading it. The tension was certainly there and it moved towards its conclusion with a breakneck pace. But I had a couple of issues with it. One, it’s stated that Tehotep broke Topaz’s only rule by creating weapons yet in earlier chapters Joseph was walking around with an axe. Now, the way my mind worked around this particular issue was that it must be against the law to create new weapons but you can still keep the old. Still, I would think a better clarification of this should have happened earlier on in the story.
Matt biting it was a bit of a bummer as I was hoping his role would have expanded a little more. I was hoping he would move past the fluff character stage, but he never seems to get the chance. But I do understand why he dies. Of course, it ups the tension and two it makes things very real for Karla and Joseph. They’re playing for real stakes here. This whole dream dance they’ve been doing with Tehotep isn’t a game and now they really get that. So Matt’s death does serve an overall story purpose.
So we get a “to be continued” type ending. It’s not necessarily bad, but I wish I would have felt like more got resolved. It seems like we were just starting to real get into the nuts and bolts of Topaz then the story just ends. So I was a bit bummed, but that’s not going to stop me from checking out the next book. I’m kind of neurotic about that. Once I start a series, it must be finished! And IMMORTAL has proven enough of an interesting series that I can continue it without worry.
