Things are definitely picking up in this chapter. There’s no Karla in this chapter so you get to see other characters step up to the plate and start showing their worth. Opal especially because man is she something! I knew she would be important, but I didn’t expect her to get in there and be a part of the action. After this chapter, she is pretty much the most badass character in the book far as I’m concerned. The wise old black lady kicking ass is going to trump as a character prototype anytime, anywhere.
And we also start to see a lot of the mystery unfolding in this story. I feel like the curtain is finally starting to be pulled back and things are starting to connect. Matt finally started to feel like he really had a purpose in this story besides for serving as the pining wannabe romantic interest. Now he’s actually a part of the tapestry of this story. I only wish some of this would have been hinted at a bit earlier in the story because I might have found myself a bit more inclined to rock with him as a character. But on the other hand, it is the job of the writer to surprise and play with the expectations of the reader. Valjeanne is certainly doing that here.
I can feel the writing growing with excitement. This chapter was probably a lot of fun to write because it was certainly a lot of fun to read.
